Central Mississippi Soaring Society (CMSS):
CMSS is a nonprofit club which was incorporated in 2004 whose members are soaring enthusiasts who enjoy motorless flight. The club is located at Harrell Field (MS08), and it is a separate affiliate of CMLF. CMSS is also recognized within the Soaring Society of America (SSA). Driving directions to Harrell Field are here.
Members fly every weekend year round when weather permits. The best flying weather is usually in the spring and fall. CMLF members do not have to join CMSS unless they intend to use CMSS soaring equipment.
Unofficial club records include and altitude of 8,000 feet, and two round trips of about 100 miles (one in the ASW-20, the other in the PW-5), and a one way trip from Harrell Field to Greenwood Leflore airport, a straight line distance of about 70 miles done in the PW-5.
INSTRUCTION - is available for student pilots and those pilots who wish to add soaring to their ratings. The club currently has two instructors, Bob Herndon (Dr. Bob) and Stan Musick. Their instruction fee is $30 per hour.
EQUIPMENT - on the field includes a Piper Pawnee tow plane, a Blanik L-23 two place trainer, and a PW-5 single place glider that are available to club members. Private gliders on the field include an ASW-20, an American Spirit, and a Concept-70.
